This collection comprises a copy of the Barunga Statement which was created at the Barunga Sport and Cultural Festival 1988 and was painted by artists Galarrwuy Yunupingu, Wenten Rubuntja, Marrirra Marawili, Bakulangay Marawili, Djambawa Marawili, Dula Ngurruwuthun, Djewiny Ngurruwuthun, Lindsay Turner Jampijinpa, and Mr D Williams Japanangka. It was presented to former Prime Minister Bob Hawke by co-creators Galarrwuy Yunupingu and Wenten Rubuntja from the Northern and Central Land Councils, following the Barunga Sport and Cultural Festival. The Statement was the culmination of years of engagement and discussion between Aboriginal groups in the Northern Territory and the Australian Government. The Statement combines Aboriginal symbolism from northern and central Australia and a translation of these into English language text, signalling collaboration and communication across cultures and languages. The Statement was presented to former Prime Minister Bob Hawke as a declaration of the aspirations of ‘the Indigenous owners and occupiers of Australia’ and a request to the Australian Government and people to ‘recognise our rights’. Bob Hawke was visiting the Northern Territory for the Barunga Festival as part of Bicentennial celebrations. The Barunga Statement went on to be hung in Parliament House; the last act of Hawke as Prime Minister was its unveiling. This copy is numbered 54/100, and includes the original signatures of Galarrwuy Yunupingu and Wenten Rubuntja.

- "The paintings surrounding the Statement are a reminder of where the words come from - they are stories of the land. The design on the right was painted by Wenten Rubuntja, Lindsay Turner Jampijinpa and Dennis Williams Japanangka from central Australia. The top of the design depicts women gatheing at Ulpanyili. It is part of the Two Women's Dreaming which links together all major language groups in central Australia. The design at the botttom of the painting shows women gathering for the same story at Ilypili. The central design shows the women coming together from both sides to celebrate their culture, to exchange gifts and to carry the story throught their country. The painting calls on Aboriginal people to come together to celebrate their culture. The three panels on the left were painted by Galarrwuy Yunupingu; Bakulangay, Marrirra and Terry Marawilli and Djiwing Ngurruwuthun from north east Arnhem Land. The top panel by Marrirra Marawilli represents the Crocodile Fire Dreaming giving land deeds to the Madarrba people in the Blue Mud Bay area. The central panel by Galarrwuy Yunupingu represents the same Crocodile Fire Dreaming giving land deeds to the Gumatj people in the Caledon Bay area. The bottom panel was painted by Djiwing Ngurruwuthun and Bakulangay Marawilli and represents the Whale Dreaming giving sea rights in the Trial bay area to the Makarrwanalmirri people."--Transcribed from foot of poster.
