Helena Turkiewicz talks about her mother; the life of her family as farmers in Poland; her father; her work from a young age in a nearby town; her resilience; life on the streets; work in a bakery; WWII; imprisonment; transportation to Siberia by Russians; conditions of life in Siberia and Uzbekistan camps; starvation and illness; the agreement reached between General Sikorski and Stalin for the release of Polish civilians from Siberia; transportation to Persia (Iran) and release at the border; starvation and suffering of refugees walking through Persia; eventual refuge with International Refugee Organisation camps at Isfahan and Teheran; relocation to Lusaka in Africa; her relationship with an Italian prisoner-of-war, Valdiero, the father of her daughter, Sophia; her emigration to Australia on the 'General Langfit' in 1950.
