"Rex Nan Kivell attributed this painting to William Anson McCleverty. McCleverty, however, left New Zealand in 1857 and is not known to have visited the South Island. The artist 'A.G.' has been tentatively identified as either A. Gay or Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Henry Watkins Grubb, 1842-1925"--Information provided by the Curator, Drawings & Prints, Alexander Turnbull Library, August 2006.

  • Alexander Grubb's full name was Alexander Grubb. The Henry Watkins part belonged to a relative. See the other pictures definitely by Grubb in the collection. I think it highly likely that as they all came from the same source, AG is Alexander Grubb. Lloyd Brodrick (ldhbrodrick@hotmail.com)
