Bringing them home oral history project.

Summary

Neary speaks about her mother, a 'half caste' Gurindji woman who was removed from Wave Hill Station and sent to Kahlin Compound in Darwin, and about her father, an Australian-born Irishman. When she was aged 2, Neary and her older sister were taken to Alice Springs where their mother was hospitalised with tuberculosis. Following their mother's death, Father Percy Smith was made their legal guardian and they were taken to Walkerville Babies Home, S.A. At age 6 Neary was moved to St Mary's Mission Anglican orphanage, Adelaide, and she describes conditions in the orphanage. Following an unsuccessful foster arrangement, she was placed in Farr Home, Springfield, where she remained until age 17. She describes living conditions in Farr House. She expresses her views on Percy Smith, and talks about her efforts to trace her family background. Neary is currently enrolled at Swinburne University and hopes to become a counsellor of removed Indigenous people.
