Quong Tart, born in Canton in 1850, emigrated to New South Wales at the age of nine. After making a fortune on the Braidwood goldfields he settled in Sydney where he became a prominent businessman and philanthropist. In 1886 he married Margaret Scarlett. He died in 1903.
