Musician, journalist, political commentator and author. Paul Lyneham was born in Melbourne in 1945 and grew up in Melbourne and Canberra. In Canberra he attended the Australian National University and worked at The Canberra times. In 1969 Lyneham became a cadet journalist with the ABC in Melbourne and was posted to London for six years. As ABC correspondent he covered the Paris peace talks of 1972-1973 that brought the Vietnam War to an end. It was during this posting that Lyneham met his future wife, journalist and writer, Dorothy Horsfield. Lyneham continued his career in Sydney and Canberra and in 1977 he won a Logie Award for Best Documentary for his report on the Utah Development Corporation's open-cut mining near Moranbah in Queensland. After leaving the ABC to join commercial television, Lyneham returned to London in 1981 as Europe correspondent for Channel Seven and in 1982 he reported on the Falklands War.
Based again in Canberra, Lyneham covered the trial of civil rights worker Father Brian Gore in the Philippines in 1983-1984. He was also sent to the Philippines to cover the February 1986 presidential election. On radio, Lyneham did a daily commentary on political developments with Andrew Olle on Sydney station 2BL. On his return to the ABC, Lyneham covered the federal political scene for the 7.30 report until 1995 when he joined the Nine Network. In 1991 he published a book of political satire titled, Political speak: the bemused voters' guide to insults, promises, leadership coups, media grabs, pork-barrelling and old fashioned double-speak. In 1996 he co-edited, with Annette Olle, the book, Andrew Olle, 1947-1995: a tribute. In 1999 he was a finalist for the Walkley Award for Excellence in Journalism. Lyneham died in Canberra in 2000.
