Bringing them home oral history project.

Summary

Somerville speaks about her father who was a Methodist minister, and about her religious upbringing. She was employed over the period 1941-65 as a cottage mother at the Methodist Mission on Croker Island, N.T. She describes living conditions at the Mission, the evacuation of the Mission to Otford, N.S.W. during World War II, and about the return to Croker Island in 1946. In 1965, Somerville returned to Sydney, accompanied by two foster children who were later returned to their family. She talks about some of the children she cared for, and gives her views on institutional care. Somerville was awarded an MBE for her work on Croker Island and the Somerville Homes in Darwin are named in her honour.
