Margaret Walker, newspaper proprietor, recalls her childhood growing up on a farm at the foothills of the Stirling Ranges, W.A. during the Depression years; her father's work as a farmer & axeman clearing 1500 acres of Mort trees, mallee & white gum by hand and horse; her mother's knowledge of bush remedies & medicines; her brother, cricketer Morgan Herbert who played in Don Bradman's 1947 Australia XI; starting a nursing career, earning 10 shillings a week at the Gnowangerup & Katanning Hospitals; getting married to Isaac Walker (1941), son of Augustine who started the Gnowangerup Star (newspaper) in 1915; joining her husband in the 1960s to assist him with running the local newspaper; their sons apprenticeships under their father; how in later years her husband's illness caused Margaret & her sons to take control of the business until the last edition on Thurs. June 26, 2003, thought to be the last newspaper in Australia printed using the hot metal flat bed press printing technology.
