Cardinal Clancy talks about his family background; early education at Holy Camp, taught by own father; decision to become a priest; entered seminary, St Columba's College, Springwood, in 1940 at 17, later went to St Patrick's, Manly; impact of WWII; ordination 23 July 1949 and first appointment at Belmore, N.S.W. He then talks about going to Rome in 1951 to study, followed by move first to Elizabeth Bay then Liverpool. Clancy then gives his impressions of Cardinal Gilroy and talks about his move to Springwood to lecture in biblical studies and be dean of discipline. He then talks about changes in seminary life; decline in numbers for priesthood; question of celibacy as a factor and the ordination of women. In 1961 he returned to Rome for further studies in sacred Scripture and he gives his impressions of 2nd Vatican Council; returned to Australia in 1965, six months as university chaplain then went to Manly to teach the Bible, in particular the Old Testament.
On 19 Feb. 1974, Clancy was ordained bishop and began work as spokesman for Sydney diocese; appointed Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn in 1979. He then gives his impressions of Canberra; talks about the development of the ecumenical movement, membership of National Council of Churches of Australia and appointment as Archbishop of Sydney in 1983. He then talks about the challenges faced such as moving seminary from Manly to Strathfield. In 1984 he was awarded Order of Australia and in 1990 he became Chancellor of the Catholic University. He also talks about his membership of the International Commision for English in the Liturgy. In 1988 he became a cardinal and he talks about the responsibilities of the position. Clancy also discusses the history of St Mary's Cathedral and he concludes with a reflection on society today and the changes he has seen.
