Summary

Part of a collection of portraits of various members of the Paterson family of artists as well as unidentified portraits of other people.

Biography/History

Hugh Paterson (artist), born in Scotland in 1856, came to Australia as a youth. He attended the Royal Scottish Academy schools and the National Gallery school in Melbourne. He helped establish the Australian Artists' Association in 1886 and the Victorian Artists' Association in 1888.

Inscriptions: "Johnstone, O'Shannessy & Co.; Collins St., Melbourne" --Printed lower left. "from your afft. brother, Hugh, 1st May 1897" --In ink on reverse.

Condition: Fair, some foxing.
