Biography/History

Artist and writer. Russell Ralph Foreman was born in Melbourne in 1921 and educated at Xavier College, Melbourne, and later at Trinity College, London. After showing early artistic talent, and at the age of ten, he became a pupil of Duncan Max Meldrum. They later collaborated on a book on painting, The science of appearances as formulated and taught by Max Meldrum (1950). Foreman's first novel, Long pig (1958), was followed by Sandalwood Island (1961) and The ringway virus (1976). Foreman was at various times a journalist, radio broadcaster and aeronautical engineer. He became an artist of note, and after settling in Italy in 1962, he established the Russell Foreman School of Painting. At the time of his death in 2000, at his home in Panzano, Florence, Foreman was working on a memoir of Max Meldrum.
