The original Dept. of Immigration was established in July 1945. It has been known as the Dept. of Labor and Immigration (Dec. 1972 to Dec. 1975); the Dept. of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs (Dec. 1975 to July 1987 and Mar. 1993 to Mar. 1996); and the Dept. of Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs (July 1987 to Mar. 1993). From Mar. 1993, the department's name reverted to the former title, Dept. of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs. It became Dept. of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs in Mar. 1996 when the Office of Multicultural Affairs was included in the portfolio. After the 2001 federal election, the Dept. merged with the Dept. of Reconciliation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs to become the Dept. of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs. In February 2006 the Dept. reverted to its former name, Dept. of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs when indigenous affairs were transferred to the new Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. A new office was created within the latter Dept., Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination. In January 2007 "Multicultural Affairs" was dropped from the Department's name, and the Department was renamed Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
