The East India Company, also known as the English East India Company, the British East India Company, and the Honourable East India Company, was an English and later British trading company that grew to rule large portions of Colonial India before being largely liquidated by the Government of India Act 1858. The term may also refer to the Dutch East India Company, which had an analogous function in the Dutch Republic and later the Netherlands, ruling what would become Indonesia as the Dutch East Indies.
