The Papua and New Guinea Act of 1949 provided for the administrative union of the Territory of Papua and the Territory of New Guinea. In June 1971 (Date of assent 13 Dec. 1971) the National Identity Bill changed the name to Papua New Guinea. It became an independent state in 1975.
