The Water and Rivers Commission was created on the 1st January 1996 from a merger of the Water Resources Directorate of the Water Authority, the Waterways Commission, and the Hydrogeology Branch of the Dept. of Minerals and Energy. In late 2003 the Dept. of Environment, Water and Catchment Protection was to be formed by merging the Dept. of Environmental Protection, Water and Rivers Commission and Swan River Trust. It was not legislated, instead the Dept. of Environment was formed and should be legislated in 2004. In 2006 the Dept. of Water was established to replace the Water and Rivers Commission. Works by these bodies are found under the name used at the time of publication
