Two In Nomines a7 Viols : TrTrBBBB / edited by Patrice Connelly

The English Renaissance composer Robert Parsons was born in the 1530s, prior to the advent of parish records. He probably began composing at the time of Edward VI who came to the throne in 1547, and the earliest composition we know of by Parsons was the First Service, a setting of the text from the Psalm book of 1549...The works in this edition survive in one complete source, and two single partbooks. The complete source upon which this edition is based is British Library Add Ms. 31390. A treble viol partbook is also at Add Ms. 32377, and another (not consulted for this edition) is in the Royal Appx 74...One of the Parsons In Nomines is ascribed to William Byrd, the other to Parsons. Other composers in this collection include Byrd, Parsley, Tallis, Lassus, Ferrabosco, Robert Whyte, Strogers and Sheppard. A small section of the first In Nomine (bars 64-65) is missing in the Treble II line. The notation is fairly normal, which helps to explain the ligatures in the complete source. In this edition, note values and pitches are original. Clefs and barring has been modernised. All of the originals were unbarred, as was common at this time.
