"The Marshalls are a family of soldiers, horsemen and farmers, as are their daughters, within the constraints of their sex and society conventions. Marshall is an occupational name, a 'caretaker of horses' in its Flemish/French origin; a 'keeper of horses' in its German roots and a 'lover of horses' in old Scots.Again and again, when researching our family this love of horses shines through. Marshalls have bred horses, raced horses, ridden, driven and enjoyed horses. Horses played a large role in the lives of our ancestors, even in the era when horses were indispensable to human existence, they participated in horse oriented recreational activities, hunting, racing, breeding and competition. Then, despite the introduction of mechanical transportation and machinery, many members of the family continued to enjoy horses and still do today.... The Marshalls have also served both at sea and on land. George's brother William was a sailor, based at Greenwich, there are sources which state that he may have served with the East India Company. There are also Marshalls who served as mariners, particularly descendants of John McCurdie Marshall. When service was required Marshall men stepped up. There are returned servicemen dotted throughout the descendants of George Marshall. Best known by Tasmanian descendants are the four sons of George Junior, who all served in the Middle East and returned. One of them and also one of Mary Rout's descendants enlisted in both WWl and WWll. This booklet is a precursor of a further publication which I plan to have completed by 25 April 2025, the 200th Anniversary of the arrival of Mary Palmer in Hobart Town. The finished book will include children (10) grandchildren (48) with the possibility of great grandchildren (78) even if just a sentence or two. I will be relying on everyone in the broader family to provide me with short snippets of biographical information about their parents and grandparents etc."--Introduction.
