The collection comprises material relating to Australian LGBTIQ+ rights, including the only known copies of the first press release issued in Australia by an LGBTIQ+ organisation, the only copies of a considerable number of newsletters of the Daughters of Bilitis, as well as minutes from the Daughters of Bilitis meetings and related papers..
Biography/History:
Dr Claudia Contessini was one of two founders of the Australian LGBTIQ+ organization, The Daughters of Bilitis, in 1969. This organisation, which was Australia’s first LGBTIQ+ rights organisation, changed its name in 1970 to the Australasian Lesbian Movement (1970-1972).
