The collection comprises a letter from pioneer colonist John Sceales to his father back home in Leathe, Scotland. Written from Bungonia near Goulburn, New South Wales. The letter is signed by John Sceales.
- Biography/History:

John Sceales was an early Australian free settler who arrived in Australia in 1839 from Leith, Scotland. Sceales traveled aboard the ship North Briton in 1838 and documented his travels and time aboard the ship. Sceales eventually settled in the Bungonia district in 1839. He was initially employed as clerk to John G. Lynch, who owned Bungonia’s general store and also one of the town’s several pubs, the Ship Inn. Towards the end of 1840 Sceales became the licensee of this inn, renaming it the Victoria Hotel.
