- Summary:
-
Ponded pasture wetlands, created by tidal bunding, is extensive across the Great Barrier Reef catchment coastline. Primarily developed to provide late dry season forage for cattle, these wetlands now support freshwater ecological communities, on what was previously estuarine habitat. There is also increasing interest to remove tidal bund walls to allow sea water inundation, promote estuarine habitat and support blue carbon initiatives. Understanding the values ponded pasture wetlands currently hold/support will be critical to having informed decision making and reducing the probability of unintended consequences from any bund removals. This study collates existing data and presents new data on the ecological values supported at the Tedlands wetland complex and the adjacent Marklands and Lloyds wetland complexes. -- Summary.
