Annotation. Exuberance, edited by Carol Cooke and Sharon Peoples, records exuberant, colourful and contemporary embroidery in Australia through both a book and an exhibition of the same title. The exhibition was held at Craft + Design, Canberra, 6 July-29August, 2023. The book is a glimpse into the diverse range of both stitch and art practices by Australian contemporary embroiderers, reflecting a brilliant and creative array of work by 20 highly individual artists working in hand stitch. The artists are: Leonie Andrews, Liam Benson, Dijanna Cevaal, Carol Cooke, Makeda Duong, Aimee Estcourt, Di Ellis, Philomena Hali, Cathy Jack Coupland, Belinda Jessup, Amy Jones, Nicole Kemp, Nichole P O'Loughlin, Liz Payne, Sharon Peoples, Joy Scott, Wilma Simmons, Carolyn Sullivan, Suzie Vickery and Robby Wright. They were chosen from both work exhibited, publications and through social media for their exuberant use of colour, and experimental stitch techniques as they examine issues in the environment, politics, identity and personal motivations for using stitch as a vehicle for creative expression. There were a few springboards from which the artist leapt into the depths of exploring colour. These included colour as an expression of exuberance, exuberant growth of plants and exuberance as a psychological state or emotion. Many artists took up readings based on Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, one of the first influential books to galvanise global environmental movements. This is evidenced in many works by the exhibiting artists and the way in which they carefully balanced the potentially negative with emotional exuberance. The book also highlights some of the amazing Australian textile hand embroidery artists that often work in solitude, often taking months, even years to complete works.
- Notes:
-
- Twenty skilled Australian hand embroidery artists apply the theory of the colour wheel, capture the exuberance and beauty of "Australian-ness". Each demonstrates their own in-depth understanding of colour, stitching, positioning, layering and the subtle variations in threads Moreover they have each added that little dash of zing, enhancing their unique embroidered artworks.
