Pencil drawing depicting the main camp scene at Yardiana, South Australia, during the construction of Australia's East-West telegraph line. The drawing shows the camp set up including tents and a central storage hut with surveying and construction equipment as well as a variety of domestic activities including clothes drying on makeshift washing lines and outdoor cooking on campfires. The drawing also depicts the people present at the camp, including Aboriginal Australians, Afghan people with camels and construction workers. The East-West telegraph line horizontally dissects the image with the Gawler Ranges in the background.

"Deriving from the Aboriginal word "Yardianna" meaning 'place of rushes', Yardea Station was established on the traditional lands of the Kokatha, Wirangu and Barngarla peoples prior to 1865, and featured a freshwater spring. This was the first property taken up in the Gawler Ranges. Equipment and materials for the telegraph line were brought in by Afghan contractors"--Information from acquisitions documentation.
