Orazio Vecchi, born in 1550, was a native of Modena in Italy.... The main form of composition Vecchi employed was the secular madrigal, and his L'Amfiparnaso, a madrigal comedy was first performed in Modena in 1594, and published three years later. He also wrote sacred music and serious madrigals, but his lighter pieces were more popular. This edition contains two seven-part secular madrigals in dialogue form. The first, "Dolcissima mia vita" comes from Vecchi's Selva di Varia Ricreatione, published in Venice in 1590. The second, "Stavasi Aminta" is from his Dialoghi musicali, also published in Venice in 1592. The larger form of seven or more parts lends itself to this type of dialogue, coming together in the final section as a rich texture that contrasts with the three and four part textures earlier in the piece. In this edition, note pitches and durations are original. Clefs and barring have been modernised. Texts are included, and performance could be with all viols, or with some singers taking a part.
