The Venetian composer Andrea Gabrieli was born c. 1533, and it is thought that he may have studied with Adrian Willaert at St Mark's, Venice, where he was later appointed organist in 1566.... Andrea Gabrieli published in many genres, both sacred and secular, some of it purely instrumental, some purely vocal and other works for mixed voices and instruments. Early influences included Cipriano da Rore, but Lassus became a much stronger influence after they met in 1562. Once Gabrieli was organist at St Mark's, the famous acoustics may have led him to change his style once again to composer antiphonal music which suited that basilica perfectly. This volume contains two of his seven-part dialogue madrigals, which have been arranged for viols with minimal editorial intervention. Clefs have been changed and modernised, but original pitches and note durations retained. "Tirsi Morir Volea" and "Io mi sento Morire" were published posthumously, in the collection Opera postume. Concerti di Andrea et di Gio. Gabrieli, Venezia, Angelo Gardano 1587. The text for "Tirsi" came from the Ferrarese poet Giovanni Battista Guarini (1538-1612). The author of the text for "Io" is unknown. (Patrice Connelly, page 1).
