"Heidelberg to Heide: Creating an Australian Landscape 1850-1950 looks at the depictions in painting, drawing and photography of Heidelberg, Eaglemont, Templestowe and the surrounding areas of Heide Museum of Modern Art in the region now know as Bulleen, Victoria, by many of Australia's greatest artists of the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Offering a celebration of the Heidelberg area as a uniquely antipodean cradle of visual inspiration, Heidelberg to Heide not only gathers together many of the classic and popular depictions of the district by Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Charles Conder and Walter Withers [...] but also encompasses early colonial depictions and nineteenth-century photography of Heidelberg, and considers the Charterisville artist's camp - an artistic colony adjacent to Heidelberg. The exhibition also considers the reinterpretation of the Australian landscape as conceived by Sidney Nolan and other modernist artists at Heide in the 1940s and beyond. In so doing, Heidelberg to Heide serves as a reminder of how the Heidelberg region, as a place of natural and aesthetic inspiration, has contributed significantly to this nation's visual sense of 'Australian-ness'." --Cover verso.
