Colonial poster advertising Hardy’s original Oomoo Wine. Thomas Hardy launched Oomoo Wine in 1870, which was named after the local Aboriginal word for ‘good’. Poster features an emu and two kangaroos, with an Aboriginal Australian carrying a spear. The outer edges of the design include three medallions on either side of poster. Features entwined grape vines in the centre piece of the poster.

Thomas Hardy had arrived in South Australia in 1850 and in 1853 planted shiraz and grenache grapes on a property a few miles out of the city on the banks of the River Torrens with an aim to ‘create quality wines that will be prized in the markets of the world’. In 1857 his first vintage was sent in hogsheads to England and in 1859 he visited England with wine samples.
