- Summary:
-
The remoteness of outback Australia from around the mid 1800s to the early 1900s resulted in unique practices reaching a peak to cater for the monetary needs of both local businesses and workers. An "I.O.U." system became commonly used in remote places in Australia. The lower denominations were a simple printed IOU and became known variously as shinplasters, calabashes, merchant notes, money tokens, queer money or blankets. This edition collates information and illustrations from auction catalogues and sale lists for 50 years from 1972 to 2023 inclusive, and adding 30 pages to the first edition. --Adapted from Preface and Introduction.
