A Labor legend and passionate fighter for those without a voice, Tom Burns earned the moniker of the 'Battler's Politician'. Over a thirty-five year span from 1960 through to 1996, Tom Burns' political career was both dynamic and diverse, winding its way through some of the most turbulent times within Australian politics. Yet despite his influence and impact, he has regrettably been a much overlooked figure in modern Australian Labor Party history. As Labor Federal President, Burns' skills as a political leader, campaigner and activist were instrumental in steering Gough Whitlam and Labor to a historic victory in the 1972 federal election. Many years later, Burns would bring his considerable experience and knowledge to his role as deputy leader to Wayne Goss, in the Labor Party's 1989 state electoral win in Queensland. After 30 years in opposition, this newly elected Labor government would finally have the power to make a difference in the lives of Burns' 'battlers'. This political biography is a tale of Burns' resilience, loyalty and devotion to the working people of Australia and seeks to appreciate how he came to earn his 'Battler's Politician' badge of honour.
