Poet, prose writer and journalist. Poet, prose writer and journalist. Dame Mary Gilmore was born in 1865 at Mary Vale, Woodhouselee, near Goulburn, eldest child of Donald Cameron, a farmer, and Mary Ann, nee Beattie. Her writing - across poetry, journalism, and essays - covered themes including nationalism, pioneering, motherhood, women's rights, history, Aboriginal welfare, the treatment of prisoners, health and pensions. Artist. Ethel Carrick Fox was born in was born in Uxbridge, Middlesex, England. She was an Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painter, who spent most of her career in France and Australia. Carrick is known for her floral still life, landscapes and scenes of outdoor urban life in parks and on beaches. She trained in London at the Guildhall School of Music and at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks (ca. 1898-1903). She married the Australian Impressionist painter Emanuel Phillips Fox in 1905, and with the outbreak of World War I, Carrick and her husband moved to Melbourne, Victoria.
