"Where treasures shine is the story of a significant government official, Lionel Gee, who served South Australia loyally for more than 50 years. His wife, Laura, was a proficient painter of native birds with connections to the colonial Unitarian families. Both were well-known and respected citizens. Lionel Gee left colourful accounts of his experiences in the diverse locations where he worked. He realised that his contemporaries and the following generation of South Australians would be curious about the pioneering days. Rising from a survey cadet, under the famous Surveyor-general George Goyder, Gee became an important government administrator and an occasional explorer. After his service as warden of goldfields during gold rushes at Teetulpa and Tarcoola in South Australia, he was stationed at goldfields in South Australia's Northern Territory - at Arltunga in Central Australia and at the Tanami in desert country. Gee worked closely with Government Geologist HYL Brown in the Department of Mines where his responsibilities included the mining legislation and departmental publications such as the Record of the mines of South Australia (1908) which remains a classic source of mining information. Typical of the dedicated public servant of his era, Lionel Gee's interesting life and career have remained hidden until now. Where treasures shine allows the reader to travel to another time, more than a century ago, as South Australia evolved from a colony to become a state in the new nation." --Back cover.
- Notes:
-
- "Cultural sensitivity and language: Aboriginal readers are advised that this book contains the names and photographs of Aboriginal people who are deceased. In matters pertaining to Aboriginal people, Lionel Gee wrote in the vernacular of his times. Some of the terms used had offensive overtones then and even more so now. Thus, in a few instances in this book the offensive words have been modified." --Page iv.
