- Summary:
-
'Nestled in an unremarkable scrap of bush on the eastern foothills of Mount Stuart, Townsville, lies the remains of a World War II Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) bunker and water wells. The concrete crumbles under the weight of the thick, tropical air, and the bush is slowly reclaiming paths that once ran in an orderly, military fashion. On the lower slopes of this now-abandoned place was the Stuart Migrant Camp, once a busy, communal home for hundreds of European migrants who, with the end of WWII, journeyed halfway around the globe to start a new life in the 'land of tomorrow'. -- Foreword.
