- Summary:
-
Joan Lindsay's classic novel Picnic At Hanging Rock is a subtle mix of mysterious and eerie events set in a time of fond nostalgia in Australian social life. The final chapter of the novel was removed at the publisher's request, resulting in a mystery that thousands of readers fascinated and longed to solve. The missing chapter eighteen reveals what happened to the schoolgirls and the teacher who disappeared without a trace after the picnic at Hanging Rock on Valentine's Day in 1900. With comments by John Taylor and Yvonne Rousseau here we find possible answers to the mystery underlying the Picnic at Hanging Rock. We learn why Irma Leopold, the heiress with the flowing black curls, is found a week after her disappearance with bloody fingers but "completely clean" bare feet that are "in no way scratched or even injured." We look at the manifestation of Lindsay's obsession with time - supposedly she couldn't wear a watch because it kept stopping, just as described in the book. We find out how Miranda and Marion disappear. We see corsets hanging in the air. We shed light on an ending that was deliberately kept vague and as mysterious as Lindsay suggests at the hanging rock picnic.
