"Insects have been a part of human history for thousands of years, serving various purposes across different cultures and regions. From their inclusion in traditional diets to their use in medicine and textiles, insects have played a multifaceted role in societies worldwide. However, only in the modern era has the concept of insect farming gained significant attention and momentum. In recent years, insect farming has emerged as a novel and promising industry, with producer-entrepreneurs and investors recognising the potential of insects as a sustainable source of human and pet food, livestock feed, and other valuable products. Against this backdrop, AgriFutures Australia has identified the production of insects as an emerging industry with high growth potential in existing and new markets. The insect industry in Australia has been rapidly maturing, echoing global insect industry trends and leveraging Australia’s strengths in agricultural research and strong biosecurity. The domestic industry features both insect producers and insect product manufacturers. Most are using black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) and/or cricket (Acheta domesticus) to service the human food, pet food (cats, dogs, reptiles) and animal feed (aquaculture, poultry) markets. In 2020, AgriFutures Australia commissioned the development of an initial RD&E Plan for the insect industry. Since then, the industry has matured significantly, and the context in which the industry operates has evolved, rendering the former plan obsolete. The purpose of this project was to develop an updated, strategic and industry-endorsed Australian Insect Industry RD&E Plan (the Plan) for the period 2023-2028."--Executive summary.
