"Teff [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter] is a small cereal grain related to millets. The crop exhibits resistance to many biotic and abiotic stresses, making it a low-risk agricultural choice. Although widely cultivated in Ethiopia, with 5.2 million tonnes of grain production annually, teff is an underutilised yet attractive novel crop for Australia. Teff plants were cultivated in northern New South Wales in 2014 on an experimental basis and cultural and other marketing strategies suitable to Australian conditions were explored. However, since that time, there has been little activity and there is very limited information or data available on its commercial production and use. Utility and expansion of cultivation of this crop in Australia is possible due to its dense nutritional properties, its strong cultural value for the African diaspora population who regard teff as a staple, and because it is gluten-free. This report considers the feasibility of growing teff as a commercial product in Australia and explores future options and opportunities for its production and marketing. The report covers factors to be considered in cultivating and producing beneficial foods from teff plants, such as available cultivars, access to seeds, production dynamics, climate requirements, environmental limitations, production and processing requirements, limitations for the industry, and health benefits of the crop, and estimates future demand and market development. This report was developed through reviewing available scientific literature on teff and following informal discussions with teff producers in Australia."--Introduction.
