Black Cockatoo began as a project for a feature film which for various reasons didn't go ahead. But after a lot of travel and reading and research and several drafts of a script, I realised that I had a story about an important part of our history and I didn't want to let it go. At the heart of the story is a forgotten fact of history: the first team from anywhere in the world to travel to England and play cricket against the English was a team of Australian Aboriginal cricketers. ...When the team was stranded in Sydney in 1867, Lawrence helped them to get back to Victoria and later followed them there to assemble and coach a team. One of the players, Johnny Mullagh, walked off the field at York because the Gentlemen of York refused to allow him into their luncheon tent. He said that he would not play cricket with someone who wouldn't eat lunch with him. That protest looked like the action of a proud and interesting man. (Introduction, page 4)
Inspired by the true story of legendary First Nations cricketer Jonny Mullagh and Australia's first ever international sporting team, this is not just about cricket. This is a story of strength, resistance, hope and possibility. (from publisher's webpage, viewed 8 January 2024)
