Unable to reconcile the failure of the previous year, Det. Sgt Jake North is reluctant to become involved with another investigation. His colleagues do their best to engage him but are frustrated. He is nonchalant when he is asked to help. When he is injured whilst off-duty, he becomes involved. In Jake's own words: 'Do you really think I was going sit around and not find out who did this to me? He had to discover who it was that shot him and killed an innocent shop owner. Jake re-traces the steps of a series of events have taken place, which bring him into the world of high-powered car racing. His partner, Anhton Roberts, has a brother, Dan Roberts, who is a driver for one of the Supacar race car teams. Experimental enhancements are uncovered, along with mysterious failures to some of the cars at one of the events. It comes to a head when at another event, the teammate of Dan Roberts is killed in an accident. Jake is encouraged to investigate and he deems it murder.
