This is a novel that portrays the world of jade gambling for the first time. Set in the tumultuous era of the 1990s, where money and material desires were in a wild frenzy, the story delves into the hidden activities of a group of people involved in the clandestine world of gemstone trading. Jade gambling, as described, involves uncut gemstones, which are also known as "rough stones" because of their unpolished nature. These gems, due to their difficulty in evaluation, possess high-risk gambling potential, capable of turning someone into an overnight millionaire or an instant pauper. This is why they are called "jade gambling," and the trading that revolves around them is known as "gemstone trading." The narrative unfolds on the stage of gemstone trading, following the protagonist, Xu Jipeng, from being deceived in Kunming to being held hostage in Ruili, eventually ending up as a male prostitute in Myanmar and serving time in a Guangzhou prison. Along the way, it portrays around ten vividly depicted characters, including Ah Zhi, Jiang Si, Da Li, and Xiao Li, and intricately showcases their trials, tribulations, joys, sorrows, and the intricate complexities of human existence-good and evil, beauty and ugliness, love and hatred. The novel's plot is mysterious and full of surprises, reflecting the clandestine and enigmatic nature of jade gambling, keeping readers thoroughly engaged.
- Notes:
- "It's a jungle principle everywhere: survival of the fittest, where the weak are prey to the strong. The jade gambling world, in particular, adhered strictly to this rule. It didn't favor the weak, and it certainly didn't believe in tears. At the end of the day, playing with gemstones wasn't about the stones anymore; it was about playing with people."--Cover screen.
