Riding the lip of the Baby Boomer wave, Anne lived through times of great opportunity and revolutionary changes. Growing up in Perth, Western Australia, daughter of a senior public servant, she knew early privilege, and had educational opportunities available to few women in her time. Yet Anne was different. While intellectually gifted and endlessly creatively capable, she also faced lifelong challenges: asthma, scoliosis-kyphosis ('hunchback'), and the neurodivergence of high-functioning autism, or Asperger's Syndrome. Called a trouble-maker, she became the Black Sheep of her family. Following childbirth, she plunged into a severe and destructive depression. This book follows Anne in a kaleidoscope of adventures as a front-line participant in the foundations in Perth of Women's Liberation, the Sexual Revolution, the Rajneeshis, the advent of computers, the Down to Earth Movement, Permaculture, and being one of the early women to succeed in breaking through the 'Glass Ceiling'. Trained as a statistician, social researcher and corporate librarian, she worked in universities, government, business and major corporations. Anne's story is one of lessons and achievements extracted from losses and challenges. By sifting and discarding, valuing and forgiving, she wins through to a stunningly happy outcome. The stories in this memoir twist and turn in unexpected directions. Anne is no ordinary woman. Addressing both challenges and opportunities, she slips into persona after persona, giving herself fully to living each reinvention. Yet, gradually the fundamental understandings emerge that give this woman strength to live fully and richly, contributing in her community well into old age. For all women, faced with disadvantages and challenges, this is a story of hope built through endurance, determination, striving, gratitude, forgiveness and grace. Anne was at the front of a wave, often out alone as a woman breaking new ground. Her successes and challenges are part of the story of her time. The generations following, riding these pioneering waves, have swept past in education, career opportunities, travel and wealth. The world of many women has changed beyond recognition as a result of the steps of women like Anne. This story helps understand where we came from.
