"In chapter 1 we present the opinions of several independent sources on the importance and the transiency of Dutch printed wall maps of the 17th century. To explain the role and importance of Dutch printed wall maps of the 17th century, chapter 2 discusses a number of the most important wall maps of the period, all of them maps that enjoyed great popularity and of which we can safely assume that thousands of copies were sold at the time. To illustrate how they were displayed at the time, and to demonstrate their art-historical value, we point out some of the most important 17th century Dutch paintings that show these wall maps in situ. To prove their high mortality, we will list the number of (complete and incomplete) examples that survive today of each of these wall maps, as well as the condition of them. Even though all of the discussed wall maps must have been very popular in the Netherlands at the time, because they depict Holland and the XVII Provinces of the Netherlands, and the world, it is shown that they have survived in one or two copies only, often only in a later state, and generally with serious condition issues."---Preface.
