Colonial Australia is rife with tales of conflict between the original inhabitants and the colonisers. This is NOT one of those stories. In the days when New South Wales encompassed virtually half the continent then called New Holland, an expedition led by explorer John Oxley sailed from Sydney in the colonial cutter Mermaid. The purpose of the expedition was to explore locations for remote penal settlements to satisfy the British policy of transportation of convicts. The expedition that took Oxley and his inexperienced companions into subtropical coastal regions of what is now Queensland, did not go exactly to script. Coming across shipwrecked white men, whose lives had been sustained for months by the goodwill of the Aboriginal people of Moreton Bay, resulted in the discovery of an otherwise unknown river - the river on which the city of Brisbane was founded in 1824. On board with Oxley was an inquisitive Irishman. His recording of the adventures of the white castaways when enjoying the generosity of the local Aboriginal people, makes this an iconic Australian story.
