- Summary:
-
Dr Matthias Gaunt came to Van Diemen's Land with his wife and sons in 1831, where he received land on the east bank of the Tamar River, north of Launceston. He named this property ‘Windermere’. With the assistance of grants, as well as his own money, he financed the building of St Matthias’ church at Windermere in 1842. It is known that between 1841 and 1844 he was master to at least 30 convict labourers - was Dr Gaunt's church, like many other buildings of the time, built by convict labourers? The author delves into convict records and other official source material, from both Britain and Australia, to unearth any evidence that this might have been the case. This compelling account examines not only Dr Gaunt's life and aspirations, but also that of each individual convict he employed.
