Writer and artist. George Henry Haydon was born on 26 August, 1822 at Heavitree, Devon, England. He emigrated to Melbourne in July 1840, returning to England in 1845. Having been apprenticed to an architect in Exeter in 1837, Haydon established himself in Melbourne as an architect, designing a number of cottages and villas and warehouses, notably for JB Were. Haydon was one of Melbourne's first drawing masters and he also sold sketches to the papers. On his return to England he wrote two books, Five years' experience in Australia Felix (1846) and The Australian emigrant: a rambling story, containing as much fact as fiction (1854), and lectured on emigration throughout England. In 1853 Haydon was appointed Steward of Bethlem Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 1889.
