Sir Laurence McIntyre was a Rhodes Scholar from the University of Tasmania who joined the Australian foreign service in 1940. His career as a diplomat included posts as Ambassador to Indonesia and Japan and he was Ambassador to the United Nations from 1970 to 1975. He was president of the UN Security Council during the Arab-Israeli war of October 1973.
