MS 7028 comprises letters of Basil Thomson mainly to his family, ca. 1870-1900, including letters written from Suva, Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane and British New Guinea; letters of his wife Grace to her family, 1890-1893, including letters from Suva and Tonga; letters of his brother-in-law Amherst Webber to his family, 1889-1911; and miscellaneous letters to Basil and Grace Thomson, 1883-1922. Correspondents include Lorimer Fison, Sir John Thurston, Sir William MacGregor, Sir Charles Mitchell, Lord and Lady Knutsford, Sir Robert Herbert, Sir Robert Meade, James Stewart, Sarah Lyttelton and Basil Thomson's father William Thomson, Archbishop of York. The collection includes miscellaneous genealogical material and cuttings (3 boxes).

Sir Basil Home Thomson was an English colonial administrator and civil servant. He spent some years in the Pacific region, notably Fiji and Tonga. He was deputy premier of Tonga during 1890 and British plenipotentiary in 1900. Later positions included governor of Dartmoor Gaol, head of the CID at New Scotland Yard and director of British Intelligence. He was also an able writer, publishing 17 works, including an autobiography, The scene changes (1937). Thomson died in London in 1939.
