1. Letter from John Hawkesworth to Lord Sandwich while Hawkesworth was preparing the official account of Cook's first voyage, 19 Nov. 1771 (MS 7218/1); 2. Letter from Capt. James Cook to Lord Sandwich written from the Cape of Good Hope during his last voyage, while waiting to be joined by the "Discovery" 23 Oct. 1776 (MS 7218/45), the letter refers to Omai, the Tahitian who had been a sensation in London society; 3. Correspondence between the Earl of Sandwich and Sir Joseph Banks, Charles Burney, Daines Barrington, John-Douglas, Anthony Shepherd, James King and Sir James Harris about the fate of, and publication of the journal of Cook's third voyage, and the music of the South Sea Islanders. 42 letters, 1779-1784. (MS 7218/2-43); 4. Document in Latin: "Copy of the inscription on the piece of plate presented by the Board of Admiralty to the Russian Major Behm" (MS 7218/44).
- Biography/History:

At the time of the letters Sandwich was the first Lord of the Admiralty. Douglas was editor of Cook's journals; Shepherd was an astronomer; Harris was British Ambassador at St. Petersburg; Burney was a friend of Sandwich and father of James; King was captain of the Discovery after the death of Clerke; Barrington was a lawyer.
