Summary:

This small collection consists of letters from Robert Mort to his brother Charles (1872-1875), cuttings from the Sydney Mail and the Moruya Examiner, a weekly statement and accounts for Bodalla, July 1874, some photographs, and a drawing of Bodalla by Robert Mort.

Biography/History:

Thomas Sutcliffe Mort (1916-1978) emigrated to Sydney in 1838 where he became a successful merchant and auctioneer. Mort was a key business man in mid-19th C New South Wales, with interests in wool selling, auctioneering, shipping and in property. In 1860 he acquired the Bodalla estate in southern N.S.W. One of his sons, Robert, took charge of the estate upon T.S. Mort's death in 1878. The family of Thomas Sutcliffe Mort is extensive as it includes his direct descendants as well as those of his brothers.
