- Summary:
-
Challenges the notion that photographic history is seen as an explosion of a Western technology advanced by the work of singular individuals; describes photography as a globally disseminated and locally appropriated medium; essays within are firmly grounded in photographic practice and examine the extraordinary diversity of non- Western photography; includes two first person pieces by Indigenous Australians; some essays analyse representations of colonial subjects from limited Western ways while others look at the changing contract between Aboriginal subjects and photographers; case studies centred in twentieth Peru, contemporary India, Kenya and Nigeria chronicle the diverse practices that have flourished in post-colonial society.
