MS 4864 comprises a small collection of correspondence with Daryl Lindsay's brother Lionel and others, 1940-1976; papers relating to the establishment of the National Gallery in Canberra, 1966-1968; lectures, addresses and notes, 1953-1971, and photographs; together with many published monographs, catalogues, pamphlets and serials concerning art. Also included are Daryl Lindsay's experiences at Wave Hill, Northern Territory, ca. 1950; addresses, talks on art, and articles written about his family; and, a copy of the 1884 publication The Lindsay memoirs (9 boxes, 1 fol. box).
- Biography/History:

Artist and art gallery director. Ernest Daryl Lindsay was born in Creswick, Victoria, in 1890. After serving in France during World War I, Lindsay returned to Melbourne and became established as an artist. In 1941 he was appointed as the director of the National Gallery of Victoria, a position he retained until 1956. He also served on the National Capital Development Commission (NCDC), Commonwealth Art Advisory Board, 1953-1971, and the Commonwealth Stamp Board. He was the foundation president of the Victorian branch of the National Trust of Australia. Lindsay was created a Knight Bachelor in 1956 for services to art. In 1965 Lindsay published his autobiography with the title The leafy tree: my family.
