- Notes:
-
- The vision for this project was broader than the eventual product. Seven separate series were envisaged, of which only three have appeared (I, III, IV). Each volume contains transcriptions of the official documentation between the Colonial Office and the local governments in the different states. Series I provides the Governor's despatches to and from England, Series III contains documents related to the settlement of the states (especially Tasmania), while Series IV which has barely begun, features documents relating to the legal system in two planned subdivision: Section A on the development of the constitution, and Seciton B on the administration of justice. Between 1914 and 1925, with a two-year suspension during WWI, Watson collated, edited and supervised the publication of 33 volumes of documents covering the period 1786 to 1848. The project recommenced in 1997 under the editorship of Peter Chapman, and the volumes produced since then in the 'resumed series' (Series III, vol. 7-10) have appeared sporadically, published by Melbourne University Press and the University of Tasmania.
