Inaugurated in 1976, the Academy had it origins in 1969 when the Australian Industrial Research Group proposed the establishment of an association of managers of research and development laboratories which could promote the application of scientific knowledge to practical purposes. Sir Ian McLennan was the foundation President of the Academy.
